Borrowers with Perkins loans have special cancellation benefits in certain situations. Borrowers should contact their school or loan servicer for information about applying for Perkins loan cancellation.
Instances in which a borrower could qualify for Perkins Loan cancellation include:
- Death of borrower
- Total and permanent disability of borrower
- School closed before borrower could complete program
- Service in U.S. armed forces in hostile fire or imminent danger pay area
- Full-time law enforcement or corrections officer
- Full-time firefighter
- Peace Corps of VISTA volunteer
- Full-time nurse or medical technician
- Full-time attorney working at a federal public or community defender organization
- Librarian with a master’s degree employed at an elementary or secondary school or public library that receives Title I funds.
- Full-time worker at a public or nonprofit child or family-services agency that serves high-risk children and families from low-income communities
- Full-time employee in the education section of a Head Start program
- Full-time qualified professional provider of early intervention services for the disabled
- Full-time special education teacher of children with disabilities in a public or nonprofit elementary or secondary school
- Full-time teacher of science, math, foreign languages, bilingual education, or other fields identified as teacher shortage areas
Instances in which a borrower could qualify for Perkins Loan cancellation for service that began on or after August 14, 2008:
- Full-time employee in a prekindergarten or child care program licensed or regulated by a state
- Full-time special education teacher of children with disabilities in an educational service agency
- Full-time teacher in a designated educational service agency that serves students from low-income families
- Full-time speech pathologist with a master’s degree working in an elementary or secondary school that receives Title I funds
- Full-time faculty member at a tribal college or university
